Review: My Shade of Brown Beauty Sample Subscription Program

I stumbled upon My Shade of Brown a month or so ago after watching a review on youtube. Although there are tons of beauty sample subscription programs on the market, I was sucked (let my delusions ride okay?) into trying this one because it promised to be geared towards brown ladies. The first month is only $5 (regularly $10), so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give it a whirl.

My opinon? Womp Womp. While subscription programs like My Glam and Birchbox bring you fun and girly themed boxes, My Shade of Brown was kind of what you expect from a name like, My Shade of Brown.  It was just all too brown for my taste.  Does that make sense? Where was the pink (figuratively)? The fun? The trendy? While I am no spring chicken, I sure look the part (lol), so I tend to gravitate towards products someone 10 years my junior would appreciate. To put it plainly, I was bored to death by this box and found the items and packaging to be something I might send to an auntie, or better still, my husband’s grandma (love you May Ma!).

Okay, so what did I get?  Let’s take a look-see:

Now, don’t be mad at me if I include that little mirror in one of my next giveaways, lol! It works, but man does it look like something for an old lady!
This was basically a tiny shea butter sample. Nothing to write home about.

I hate using a lip brush  to try a lipstick, so this was just all wrong for me. I need something I can slather on in a hurry if need be. Plus, the color pay off was eh…. This was just a bad way to send a lippie sample.

The shampoo was very sudsy! So if are looking for a natural sudsy poo grab this one! The conditioner? No swoonage or major slippage either!

Obviously, My Shade of Brown does not have a Birchbox or My Glam budget, so I wasn’t expecting all that glitz, however, I do think once the creators gain a clear perception of their target audience this company could easily rival the big name sample box programs. I actually prefer the homemade feel of this box, but the items? Not so much. Sigh, if only I had the means and the know how! Wouldn’t you Dimes like to see a DimePieceonaDime subscription box?? Ha Ha, dream with me!

July will be my final month in the subscription box game, at least for a while. I am up to my ears in samples I forget I have and therefore forget to use, so I’ll be shopping my stash for a few months before I consider subscribing to any more. But be sure to let me know if you stumble upon a new one. You all know I likes to keep it new and fresh!!

xoxo,
