Hot Topic: Benzino Goes In on Amber Rose Over Slut Walk

So Benzino is mad and here’s why:

For the second year in a row, Amber Rose hosted her “Slut Walk.” Basically, it’s a day when folks come together to celebrate women’s bodies, while speaking out against body-shaming. The idea behind the walk is to bring to the forefront the assertion that women, like men, are sexual beings, and we shouldn’t be made to feel ashamed for embracing our sexuality. The walk is also meant to bring  speak out against rape culture, a term meant “to show the ways in which society blames victims of sexual assault and normalizes male sexual violence.” Amber didn’t create the walk, by the way, she simply hosts the one in Los Angeles.

Rapper, Benzino, however, isn’t here for it. Here’s what he has to say about it:

My Thoughts

I’m a feminist, and I am all for the intent of the slut walk. I’m all for speaking out against rape culture and body-shaming. What Amber rose is putting on, however, feels more like a press-op. Also, not for nothing, I’m not comfortable with the word slut. I’m just not here for it. Would anyone be here for a “Niggas Lives Matter Movement?” I know I wouldn’t. Or a “Nigga Walk?” I get folks want to embrace the word and make it positive, but I can’t get on board. Call it something else, please. Which, I guess, is why Benzino is having a a fit. He’s mad at the name and thinks it’s a walk meant to encourage women and girls to run around having a lot of sex. Benzino needs to read more, and Amber needs to figure out a way to make the walk feel more genuine (for me.)

Anyway, lots of reality stars were at the walk, which also made me roll my eyes. How many of these women are actual feminists? I’m no learned feminist, by the way. I’ve read some Lorde and Hooks, but that’s about it. What I do know, however, is that feminism isn’t about just attending rallies and taking cute pictures. So is Amber walking the walk? Or is she just making a lot of noise and collecting a check?

  1. Anytime a woman tries to stand up for her beliefs, power over her life and her body, she is condemned. The word nigga, when used by and meaning morphed by the very people it was meant to disrespect, it diminishes the power meant to suppress and Amber is doing the same with slut. I don’t think every women wants to claim the power of her body and sexual behaviors because it is so deeply engrained how we should govern ourselves for the approval of men that most women will frown upon the women who stands up.

    1. Amber didn’t invent the “Slut walk” and I’m not condemning her participation. I will never accept the word slut or nigga. Period. Everytime it i is used it does not, for me, diminish the power of the oppressor. I get the intent, I get it, but it doesn’t have that effect on me.

  2. I’m kinda confused. So the slut walk isn’t meant to glorifying being a slut? I can get the point as far as sexuality goes but at this point I believe anything Amber does reeks of political or social justice more like attention and money. No shade though ☺♥

    1. I’m not sure i understand what you mean. So you feel Amber is genuine or something else? The word “reeks” means smells badly, so you think what she does is all about political and social justice…which would be great, but when you say reeks it feels like you’re saying something else..so I can’t quite follow.
