We here at Lisa a la mode, are fans of both of Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj, so we’re going to preface this post by making it known that we are somewhat disappointed that these two talented ladies have gone down the path of many a male MC before them.
That being said, the hip hop world has been kind of stagnant as of late. A lot of us 30 somethings have had enough Desiigner, Migos, and Future to last us a lifetime. So this battle of the female MCs is right on time. The grown hip hop community needed this, not because we want to see two of the greatest female rappers of this generation go toe to toe, but because it’s real Hip Hop. And we ain’t seen this in a minute. Drake and Meek Mill came really close two years ago, but that’s been about it.
How The Nicki Minaj Vs. Remy Ma Beef Began
The beef apparently started when Remy Ma allegedly threw shots at Nicki Minaj in her “Wait a Minute” Remix (Skip to 2:12 to listen to Remy’s verse):
Will I smoke this bitch? Yes
Probably fail my piss test
Get rid of those fake breasts
And put a vest on this bitch chest
It’s lunch time, she food
I’m Troy Ave with that tool
Both hands on it like noon
Remy Ma, I’m a goon
The city big, I’m state time
I’m snatching wigs like waistlines
Crack a bitch with my cellphone, really put her on Facetime
That ghostwriter bout to call her
That lifeline getting shorter
RIP Biggie Smalls, why the fuck they ain’t warn her?
I was cooking in the kitchen
I was minding my business
Now I gotta get gangsta
Cause these bitches is haters
At the time, Remy denied that the references in her verse were about Nicki. But ain’t nobody buying it. Everyone knows that Nicki’s former boyfriend, Safari, has said on multiple occasions that he was Nicki’s ghostwriter.
But if Remy says there wasn’t a beef, I guess we had to believe her, right? She even congratuted Nicki for her win at the 2016 BET Awards to show:
Fast forward to last week, Gucci Mane released Make Love featuring Nicki Minaj. In the song, Nicki raps “Silly rabbit, to be the queen of rap/You gotta sell records, you gotta get plaques.”
In response, Remy snatched the gloves off, and within 48 hours released a 7-minute diss track aimed directly at Nicki, called Shether.
Listen to it here:
Nicki has since responded with these two Instagram posts, one referring to the less than stellar records sales of Remy Ma & Fat Joe’s project, and another where she implies that Beyonce gave her the Queen of Rap title. Interestingly, the post regarding the record sales of PlatoOPlomo has since been deleted.
The diss record has brought out a boat load of memes. While Nicki’s barbies are trying to stand up for her, the overwhelming majority have already deemed this a win for Remy Ma and the end of Nicki Minaj’s career. And we agree.
