Black Twitter Drags Kendall Jenner and Pepsi For Commercial Mocking Black Lives Matter

Yesterday, Pepsi released this video featuring model and reality TV star, Kendall Jenner:

The well-intentioned video was meant to show that Pepsi can solve all of the division in the world, and seems to reference the Black lives Matter Movement in one particular scene:

Folks on Twitter felt the video was making a mockery of the very real and deadly consequences black folks face when they interact with police during tense situations like a protest.

The #pepsi hashtag is still trending with folks making a mockery of the video. Here are some examples:

The dragging was funny but Pepsi did not make this about BLM. A few seconds referenced it. It was about different protests that have happened over the past two to three years. Was it tone deaf? Yes indeed it was. Just tone deaf as Coke’s 70s commercial with its version of the Rainbow Tribe in Italy implying Coke could bring about world harmony aka end racism and sexism. For me this was one of those moments where black twitter and liberals got caught up in a social media issue that was not that big. I am willing to bet those some ones doing the dragging will be at family barbecues, festivals, and amusement parks throwing back cans and bottles of Pepsi.

Pepsi and Coke do this type of thing to insert themselves into trending social issues to make their brand sound iconic. Brands do this. Look at Apple Watch using Beyonce’s song “Freedom” in their commercial. What does the Apple Watch have to do with message of that song? What does giving a cop a Pepsi have to do with social change? Absolutely nothing. It is just another tone deaf marketing tactic
