Shea Moisture Cosmetics Review & Swatches

Shea Moisture Cosmetics Review & Swatches

I couldn’t wait for a nearby Target to stock the shelves with the new cosmetics line by Shea Moisture. I’ve been using Shea Moisture hair and skin products since 2010, with great success, so I expected nothing less than greatness from their cosmetics line. So let’s get straight to the review, shall we? Incidentally, I only purchased the Illuminators (Fancy word for ‘Bronzers’) and the Foundation.

Let’ start with the Shea Moisture Cosmetics Sheer Foundation in the color Ka’u Bronze Blaze.

Pros:

  • Light-weight
  • Packed with good-for-your-skin ingredients ( vitamins, shea butter, etc.)
  • Pretty good pricing at $12.99 a tube, which isn’t that much more expensive than Covergirl or Revlon foundation neither of which is packed with anything other than chemicals.
  • Sold at Target, and everyone here in the US can find a Target.
  • Is listed as sheer coverage, but is really a medium to full coverage foundation

Cons:

  •  NOT for oily or acne prone skin. This stuff was sliding off my face a few hours after application.
  • Also, while I can’t say my recent breakout is due to the use of the foundation, I’m inclined to think it may have had something to do with it. Therefore, I’m returning it.
  • When trying to actually find a foundation in my shade I had a bit of difficulty. There are TONS of colors to choose from, and based on the packaging there are perhaps 4-5 shades that could potentially match me. I think we need pictures of women wearing the foundation so we can choose the right shade. Otherwise, it’s a total guessing game.
  • The color of the foundation is only found on the box. Not on the actual tube containing the foundation. #Annoying
  • Dewy. Which can be okay, I guess. But I’d like the option of a more matte finish.

Now, onto the Shea Moisture Illuminating Powders. I purchased two, Ceylon Cinnamon and Mandalay Dusk:shea-moisture-mandalay-dusk-swatchIsn’t the little compact adorable?shea-moisture-bronzer-packaging

Cons:

I really have only one con about these bronzers, and that is, the price! $11.99 is too much for a drugstore bronzer.

Pros:

  • Nice packaging
  • Great color Pay off.
  • Ceylon Cinnamon is a beautiful golden highlight, while Mandalay Dusk is a deep dark brown, perfect for contouring even the darkest skin tones.

Shea Moisture has a pretty extensive cosmetic display at Target. You’ll find blush (both cream and powder), CC cream, lip glosses, lip stains, and even makeup brushes. Let me know what, if any, Shea Moisture product you may be in the market for. I’m thinking I might give the brushes a try.

  2. Did the illuminating powder help to set the foundation?

    1. Hi Andrea, no, illuminating powders like this one are meant for highlighting certain areas on your face, so i used the illuminator on the tops of my cheeks. I set the foundation with a loose powder in my skintone. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I am not a big make-up person but I love the Shea Moisture line of hair and skin products. Will look for this over the weekend! Thanks for the review!

    1. Hi Tarsha! Be sure to come back and tell me what you think.

  4. Wow it looks really nice on your skin but those cons are a no no! I have fairly oily skin so I don’t think it’ll work for me bummer..thanks for the honest review!

    1. Anytime! Yes, this is not for the oily skin girl!

  5. You are so right about needing pictures to aid in picking the right shade. I went to Target this week to check out the line and was sooo overwhelmed by the amount of products that I just left the store lol. I think I may pick up the Mandalay Dusk as it seems like a good product to contour with. Thanks for the honest review!

Btw, I know im super late with it, but I sent you my submission for the Friday Feature :).

    1. You’re not late at a ll, I do the feature friday once a month, so I got your submission! I think yours will post in July, or sooner if I’m low on content, lol! Thanks so much for sending your info! And YASS!! it’s WAAAAY too hard to pick the right shade.

  6. I’m am so sad that they don’t sell these in my drugstore. I guess I will find them online. The bronzer looks really nice on you.

    1. Thanks, Tab! They don’t sell at the Target in my hood either. I had to go to the one by my job. I’m really happy with the quality of the bronzers.

  7. Thanks for the review!! I too am weary about spending over a certain dollar amount for drugstore brands so I COMPLETELY get your concerns with the price. Speaking of hiding your dark spots, have you tried Shea Moisture’s “dark spot correcting moisturizer”? I’ve been using it and it works WONDERS! You can check a review on my blog – just search “shea moisture” under skincare.

    1. Pardon me while I head out to Target, lol! I don’t even need to read your review! lol..xoxo (but i will)

  8. What shad to you wear in Mac or Revlon . Need a comparison.

    1. Hey Carai! I’m NW45 in mac. I have a review of revlon colorstay as well. I have the review here on the blog and also on youtube. Hope you check them out!

  9. I’m EXTRA late, but I started using the cream foundation with 100% silica to finish and it ZAPS all that extra oil! As a matter of fact, I made the mistake of not moisturizing today and my skin is too dry even with the shea moisture on…

    1. really?? what color do you use?? i need to go get it tomorrow to test it out!
