4B Natural Hair Journey

4B Natural Hair Journey

The title of this post may be misleading in that I have absolutely no idea what these so-called hair classifiers really mean.  All I know is that naturally, I have teenie tiny curls, and without heavy conditioners and creams, those curls pretty much disappear. If that means I have 4B Natural hair or 5Z, so be it.

I’ve been natural for over 15 years, but you’d probably never know it unless you know me personally. For the last three years I’ve avoided wearing my hair in its natural state because it’s so much work. I would watch these girls on youtube with their jellies and butters and twists and braids, and I swear my blood pressure would go up. All of that work to “embrace” your natural hair??! In any event, I, too, have put down the flat-iron for the summer because, as you can imagine, I have quite a bit of heat damage, and also because I really need to work on allowing all of the hair I lost due to postpartum shedding to grow in.

When I was rockin my natural hair, I was the wash and go type, but I was always left with the worst tangled and matted mess! At the end of the day, I’d be in the bathroom crying as I worked to get those tangles out. My then boyfriend, now husband, would also complain about how I’d leave the doorknobs all greasy from all of my “sealing” butters.

Now, my approach is much different. If you follow me on Instagram and Facebook, you know that I’ve already started posting some of my tried and failed methods, and you may see more. I’ve realized that  wash n’ gos will never work for me, and that instead I will work with braid-outs, and maybe a twist out here and there. No doubt, they will leave my hair frizzy, but perhaps with a little less tangling and more stretch. I’m actually embracing the frizz, I guess. What can I do? It’s the way it grows out of my head (and yes, I have a million products and they all work fine, and no I won’t be buying not one more to “try”.)

My stance on natural hair is the following:

If you have natural curls, kinks, and waves, what’s your stance on the whole thing? And how do you cope with being a rarity in our straight-hair loving society?

  1. I saw the last pic with the baby and forgot what you wrote (j/K) Your hair looks great! Natural for 15 years, wow that’s a long time. I’m too lazy to straighten my hair so I embrace the frizz and my big hair. I love it and it doesn’t bother me that everyone else has straight hair because I kinda like to stand out from the crowd *judge me*

    1. Amen, sister…but your hair is GLORIOUS!! i’d embrace it too! lol…my hair used to be so thick, but after my son it thinned out considerably! oh well…xoxox

  2. I like your hair that way! So obviously my hair is a different texture but I used to straighten it and now I wear it “natural” meaning waves and curls and it pretty much does whatever it wants and you know, it hasn’t made a single bit of difference in my life! It’s actually less of a headache now!

  6. I love this! I too struggle with dealing with my hair in its natural state. It’s much easier for me to have it blow straight. You’ve inspired to at least try!
