If you missed the State of the Union address last night, you missed out seeing one of Michelle Obama’s best ensembles since the President took office.
Indeed, she looked incredible from head to toe. From her hair, to her makeup, to her body in the dress, the Flotus was simply breathtaking in this Narciso Rodriguez dress:
I can’t begin to express how incredibly important it is to see women like Michelle Obama in positions of power. As a dark-skinned woman of color, I grew up seeing very few women who look like me on TV and in magazines. I felt inferior to my fair-skinned girlfriends, and often went to great lengths to ensure that I could measure up to European standards of beauty. I even went to so far as to insist on having “mixed” heritage just so I could compete. It’s pretty absurd, when I look back on it, but at the time I felt quite strongly that being a “regular black girl,” wasn’t enough.
Today, I am so so proud to share the company of women like Michelle Obama, Lupita Nyong’o, and Viola Davis; regular black girls. Girls who do not posses any of the European features we routinely celebrate in other black women, girls who are still gorgeous in their own right. Three cheers for regular black girls!
What did you think of Michelle Obama’s outfit?
Hey, Boo! My name is Lisa and you’ve stumbled upon my own little corner of the world. I’m a 30 something-year-old writer/mother/wife who happens to love lipstick, high heels, blackness, and the truth. You’ll find a mix of everything on this site, so I won’t bore you by trying to define this space. I hope you stay awhile!
