Alicia Keys Is Makeup Free and I’m Not All the Way Here For It
The internet is abuzz with Alicia Keys’s latest reveal. New single out? Nope, at least not yet. Ms. Keys is debuting her fresh face full of freckles and I couldn’t be happier for her. Keys has just launched her #makeupfree campaign in what she says is an effort to empower all women to accept their natural beauty. I’m sure it must be a relief to reveal her flawless face to the world.
Ms. Keys certainly isn’t the first celeb to show herself as she is, so I can’t help but be a wee bit skeptical about the motive here. I’m sure there is an album release coming, kudos to her, but I think this message would be better received if it were coming from someone who had what some might consider imperfections. Fine, maybe she hated her freckles at some point, and maybe some folks think they are imperfections, but on the whole, I think it’s easy to show your bare face when your bare face looks so darn good.
I mean she’s out here with naturally thick brows, pretty white teeth, straight nose, no acne scars or dark under eye circles that I can see, and a head full of curly hair. I mean, she’s gorgeous. How hard can it be to show your naturally gorgeous face?
As a beauty blogger and someone who knows first-hand the power of makeup, I’m just not sold on the message here. With all the makeup shaming that goes on on social media, I can’t help but think Keys’s message will be somehow twisted to shame those of us who proudly wear makeup. I wear makeup maybe one or two days out of the week, and given the right circumstances and professional camera, you better believe I’d be showing my happy #makeupfree face to the world, too. So I am not mad, I’m just rolling my eyes a little bit. Am I alone?
