The New Miss USA Has Been Crowned and She Looks Like Me
Deshauna Barber, a 26-year-old Army Reserve officer from DC has been crowed Miss USA and I couldn’t be more pleased.
Now, I’ll be the first to admit. I don’t know much about beauty pageants, and to be fair I’m not all the way here for them. BUT, I am here for black girl’s winning. Especially when the black girl has dark skin and an “ethnic name.”
And before folks start in on the “why does it matter?” Let me say this: We’ve heard it our entire lives, Dark skin= unattractive, and an “ethnic” name means you’ll never get a job. I am an adult woman, and I can tell you that colorism is still very present and hurtful, and it changes your perception of yourself and the world forever. Don’t believe me? Take a look:
And fine, this is a random troll, but these sentiments aren’t new, and even seeing the tweet above set my blood boiling. But I digress, Deshauna Barber is winning and for that I am happy. Go on, Gurl! Rock that crown and sashay that sash! WERQ!
