Gabrielle Union continues to defy gravity as the cover model for the November issue of Essence Magazine. While the 43-year-old actress is indeed a sight for sore eyes, she uses her feature to discuss her role in Nate Parker’s Birth of a Nation, as well as her feelings regarding today’s racial climate.
As a reminder, Union, is a rape survivor in real life, and portrays a female slave whose rape is the catalyst for the revolt in Birth of Nation. After Parker’s own involvement in a sexual assault case in 1999 came to light, the film has come under major scrutiny, with many people choosing to boycott.
As a rape survivor and as an advocate, I cannot shy away from this responsibility because the conversation got difficult…I don’t want to put myself above anyone’s pain or triggers. Every victim or survivor, I believe you. I support you. I support you if you don’t want to see the film. I absolutely understand and respect that. I can’t sell the film. -Gabrielle Union.
