This Stunning Black Model Recreated High Fashion Campaigns To Showcase The Lack of Diversity in the Modeling Industry

It is time for more diversity and models of all races being seen

These are the words that will greet you upon visiting the website for Black Mirror (visit HERE), an epic photo-series shot by Raffael Dickreuter, featuring Liberian-American model, Deddeh Howard.

The pair teamed up to create a photo-series wherein Deddeh mirrors the same posing and attire as other high fashion campaigns featuring white models.

According to The Daily Mail, when Howard tried to secure work with modeling agencies she’d be told that she wasn’t a fit because they already had a black model.  The industry seems to operate as though having one or two black models fulfills their “diversity quota,” which ultimately speaks volumes about the lack of progress we’ve made in recent years.

Rather than simply speak about the issue (which happens fairly frequently), Howard and her photography chose to highlight the issue in the best way possible. Not only are the images striking, and the execution and detail so incredibly perfect, but the message is so clearly conveyed that I want to both weep with sadness, and shout out for joy at the same time.

‘Yesterday at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show you could see the same pattern you can see at New York Fashion Week or any other famous fashion event: Black girls are almost invisible. There is the odd one here and there, but it always feels like an afterthought.

‘Why can’t the big brands not embrace our diversity more and give all of us visibility? With this Black Mirror project I hope to show the world that it is time for all of us being seen.’

Preach Deddeh, preach.

As the photos suggest, to complete this project the two had to put in a considerable amount of time and detail into nailing every single shot. According to the Daily Mail, Raffael, the photographer said, “they even had to track down the right 1939 Indian motorcycle to remake Gigi Hadid’s Guess ad.”

Yes she is beautiful, the article talks about diversity… This is Black vs White. Next time you do a “diversity” campaign, actually use other nationalities, it would have a bigger impact.
