I’ve never judged Lil’ Kim for choosing to alter her appearance. Does it make me sad? Yes, but I don’t think it’s funny or even news at this point. It’s clear she has had extensive plastic surgery in an attempt to diminish her black features.
In an interview she gave Newsweek in 2000, Kim was reported to have said:
All my life men have told me I wasn’t pretty enough—even the men I was dating…It’s always been men putting me down just like my dad. To this day when someone says I’m cute, I can’t see it. I don’t see it no matter what anybody says. I have low self-esteem and I always have. Guys always cheated on me with women who were European-looking. You know, the long-hair type. Really beautiful women that left me thinking, ‘How I can I compete with that?’ Being a regular black girl wasn’t good enough.’”
This quote, for me, felt like an admission of sorts. And frankly, even without an admission, we’re not blind. We can see what she’s been doing for years. That’s why it was pretty surprising when Kim recently blasted a follower for calling her out about the bleaching.
Well, there you have it. Kim says she doesn’t bleach her skin, which now leads me to wonder if she’s convinced herself that this is her natural appearance. Sad, truly.
