A friend of mine recently said (good-naturedly):
I don’t know why you always bring up being fired, lol! A lot of people get fired. I was fired. It’s not a big deal.”
She was right, of course. People get fired all the time. Most people take it as a lesson learned, put it behind them, and get a new job. But then there are the select few who use that experience to drive them to pursue what was intended. I can’t quote scripture, but I believe in God. God, for me, is an energy that speaks to me in my most difficult times. It’s been 5 years since I was fired and every day I know that it was that single moment that led me to where I am now and where I am going. Sure a lot of people get fired, but most people don’t believe and trust that that experience happened for a reason.
Janelle Monae is one of those rare few who used being fired to take her to where she is now. In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Monae revealed that she was fired from her job at Office Depot for using one of their computers to respond to a fan’s email. At the time she was living in a boarding house with six other girls, and she couldn’t afford a computer.
