When she’s not out and about slaying the fashions and winning Oscars, Lupita Nyong’o is at Vanity Fair teaching the masses about a a gesture commonly referred to as the “African Finger Snap.”
As a Haitian-American woman I can recall seeing this snap used by my grandmother, on occasion, but Lord knows I could never replicate it, and I certainly didn’t know what it was called. Watching Lupita Nyong’o teach us how to do an African Finger snap made me feel both nostaligic and proud. So many of our traditions as children of the Diaspora can be so easily and readily linked back to the mother land.
