When she’s not out and about slaying the fashions and winning Oscars, Lupita Nyong’o is at Vanity Fair teaching the masses about a gesture commonly referred to as the “African Finger Snap.”
As a Haitian-American woman, I can recall seeing this snap used by my grandmother, on occasion, but Lord knows I could never replicate it, and I certainly didn’t know what it was called. Watching Lupita Nyong’o teach us how to do an African Finger snap made me feel both nostalgic and proud. So many of our traditions as children of the Diaspora can be so easily and readily linked back to the motherland.

Can you do it?!
Hey, Boo! My name is Lisa and you’ve stumbled upon my own little corner of the world. I’m a 30 something-year-old writer/mother/wife who happens to love lipstick, high heels, blackness, and the truth. You’ll find a mix of everything on this site, so I won’t bore you by trying to define this space. I hope you stay awhile!
