Amari Williams, of Carencro High School, was denied entry into her Junior Prom for what school officials say was  a violation of  the school dress code.

According to an article in Allure, parents were informed back in January that all dresses had to be floor length all the way around. In this instance, one of Amari’s ankle’s was exposed, so she was technically in violation of that strict requirement.

The length has to be all the way to the ground, all the way around; kind of easy to remember…In this case, the dress was not all the way to the ground and on that basis, it wasn’t considered a formal dress.”  Lafayette Parish School System chief administrative officer Joe Craig explained to the local news station.

When Amari’s mom got the call that her daughter’s dress was causing problems at the school, she  rushed over only to see other kids, clearly in violation of the code, being admitted into the prom. None of those children were dressed in African garb:

Amari’s mom told Yahoo Style:

“The dress code, when I looked over it, it did mention that the dress had to be floor length, and they considered it not formal since it wasn’t the same length all the way around…But then I brought it to [the principal’s] attention that some of the rules in the dress-code policy also state that midriffs, high splits, or low back dresses aren’t allowed. As I’d been standing there, I saw she’d been allowing all those types of dresses into prom, but here she denies my daughter, and she’s dressed appropriately, not showing any skin or anything inappropriate at all. Her response to me was she used her own judgement.”

Keep in mind,  Amari insists that the school principal had approved of the gown before the prom.

“Hearing from Ms. Qualey, the person who approved it, hearing her say I can’t get in, that was heartbreaking because you approved it but now you’re saying something totally different,” Amari told KLFY News.

What’s the matter with people? Makes you wonder if the length not being “all the way around” was really the issue.

  2. These folks love putting unrealistic rules on these kids as if this matters in the real world when they graduate. They love ruining kids experiences too. It’s really operating to read these stories around prom season. Let these kids live.
