Danielle Brooks, of the hit Netflix Series, Orange Is the New Black, is killing it this year and I am so so so here for it. In addition to a starring role on the hit show, Danielle, a Juilliard strained actress by the way, won a Tony award for her role as Sophia in the Broadway adaptation of The Color Purple, and was one of the featured faces in the Lane Bryant #ThisBody Is Made To Shine campaign in 2016.
Our girl can, sing, act, and model and I am not mad at it!
In People Magazine’s 2017 Most Beautiful Woman issue, Brooks also dropped some gems about embracing the skin you are in.
“Sometimes I’ll look at myself and be like, ‘Dang girl, you got a lot of stretch marks.’ But then I’m like, ‘That’s just the road map of my strength…They remind me of things that I’ve gone through. I need to just embrace them and celebrate them. For the most part, I find ways to embrace my body.”
People also asked Danielle to do a makeup-free shoot, and though she films OITNB sans makeup, she was still a bit nervous doing it for the magazine:
“I kept calling my manager and being like, ‘Are we really doing this?? Why are we doing this?? Ahhhhh!’ But I was the one who wanted to do it!”
But she did it, and she shared even more gems about embracing her gorgeously melanated self:
“I know for a fact that I am beautiful, and what I do know for a fact is that we are spirits, at the end of the day, regardless of how much melanin we have, or how many pimples we have, or how curly or straight our hair is. It’s really about what we have inside of us, that makes us who we are.”
