We’ve all heard Kevin Hart‘s early stand up stories about his ex wife, Torrei Hart, and their (seemingly) hilariously horrible marriage. Of course we would laugh it off, but recently Kevin opened up in an interview about how bad his relationship really got.
According to The Jasmine Brand, Kevin realized things were beyond repair one day when he realized he was prepared to actually fight his then wife. It was an “ah ha” moment for him.
“Me and my ex wife. When it got violent where we’re fighting– (I’m thinking) Am I really fighting? Am I holding my hands up as if she’s a man right now? Oh my God. This is…I’m out. I’ve really got my hands up to not defend, but counter. Like, I’m waiting for you to throw a punch. Cuz I’m about to counter the sh*t out of you. Like I’m really that upset to where I have to get in a stance. When you get in a stance, that’s when I checked myself.”
Realizing that he could only control his reaction to Torrei’s behavior, he decided to remove himself from the situation. In his memoir I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons (Purchase HERE) he talks candidly about his tumultuous first marriage as well as his decision to end it.
“Me and my ex got into it and I had – I took a stance like, ‘Okay, I’m waiting.’ Cuz I was gon’ dip and bow and I’m like ‘Oh my god I’m gone’. I’ve lost it. At what level of anger that I’m at, that I’ve gotten here. I was like ‘Alright Kev, you’re gonna take responsibility.’ Whether she did whatever she did, you gotta start taking responsibility.”
Of course, today, Kevin and Torrei are in a much better place, successfully co-parenting and very supportive of each other’s careers. Hart has more than just negative stories of his past in this memoir, he also, of course, brings the funny with anecdotal stories featuring his celebrity friends, children, and more.
