“Pac is Supposed To Be a Classic. They F*cked it up!” 50 Cent, Jada Smith, and Others Are Not Here For The Tupac Biopic

Yesterday marked Tupac’s 46th birthday and the release of All Eyes On Me, his life story on film.

One of Tupac’s greatest friends, Jada Pinkett Smith, was none too pleased with her portrayal in the film. Jada and Pac met as teens at Baltimore School for the Arts. and remained close up until his death.  Tupac immortalized her in the poem “Jada” that appeared in his book The Rose That Grew From Concrete, and she sent him letters and photos during his 1995 prison stint.

Jada took to Twitter yesterday to wish her late friend a Happy Birthday, and to also express her feelings about the biopic:

The film’s producer LT Hutton has been equally vocal, providing a response to Jada’s comments to TMZ :

50 Cent took to Instagram (early) to bash the movie calling it “trash”:

XXLmag.com snagged the rest of his comments,

“I just want you to keep me in mind when you watch that shit. Straight out of Compton was good. That was a bad movie man, 2PAC is suppose to be a classic  they fucked it up. John Singleton said it was wack, I had to see it for my self. Go check it out you gonna be mad as a mother fucker. I want my money back now!!! Some of yal think I’m hating. SMH nah go see it. When you walk out of ther motherfucker like this you gonna learn to listen to me.”

John Singleton has never strayed from his opinion of the film.  He left the film two years ago due to creative differences, according to HipHopDx. Singleton stated,

“I haven’t watched it and I refuse to watch it, I know that they fucked it up so I’m not even trying to give it any attention.”

Producer LT Hutton and director Benny Boom addressed Singleton’s criticism in an interview with the Breakfast Club.  Hutton cites the creative differences as Singleton wanting to open the film with an anal scene with a Caucasian woman. Allegedly, Singelton  wanted to depict Tupac being raped in prison (an unconfirmed rumor), and include the late Afeni Shakur in threesome.  Check the interview below for their response:

None of this bodes well for the film, which has received mixed to negative reviews from critics.  It currently holds 25% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Both Jada Pinkett Smith and John Singleton knew Tupac personally.  They had their own relationships with them, of course they feel strongly about how he is depicted on film.  As for 50 Cent, he tends to always be mad or dislike something.  I think there will always be backlash when making a biographical film.  Especially about someone as beloved as Tupac.

Critics usually aren’t kind to films with African American casts, so I’m not sure how reliable they will be in their reviews.  If you’re a true Tupac fan, I say give it a shot.  There will always be something worse (*cough, Suicide Squad, cough*).
