The BET Awards aired last night and they didn’t disappoint. The star-studded awards seemed a little more balanced in terms of acts for everybody. There were great performances and some…yeah. There was something for everybody. Let’s get into it.
I ain’t got time to waste!
3. Trey Songz
The yodeling “crooner” didn’t fail to give a lackluster performance of his singles “Nobody Else But You” and “Animals”. He, clearly, has the baddest agent in the land because he stays booked for awards shows. Issa no for me, Dawg!
2. Mary J. Blige
Everybody’s favorite auntie, Mary J. Blige, looked amazing tonight. Unfortunately, she didn’t sound amazing. She performed “Set Me Free” and “Love Yourself.” and even A$AP Rocky couldn’t breathe any life into the set. At this point in the game- she, definitely, should be showing out on stage. She did do her signature “Auntie Stomp”. We will ALWAYS be here for that!
Maxwell just hasn’t been right since he cut his hair and last night’s “eccentric” performance of his 2016 hit “God” was a perfect example of that. Typically, when a singer rolls around on the ground, he’s cutting up. See Bilal’s *click the link* performance for the Prince tribute. Maxwell’s antics just came off like toddler throwing a temper tantrum.
The BET Awards had a lot of great moments but the very best were:
4. Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars was phenomenal on stage. He sang and danced while a band played live music. It’s exactly what a live performance should look like. It was a party and I wanted to be there.
3. El Debarge AKA “Cat Daddy Smooth”
Decked out in a red suit from the finest “Catdashery”, El Debarge strutted out on stage to belt out George Michael’s hit single “Careless Whisper”. It would have been easy to cast him aside as a person who could sing this classic jam. However, the well-coiffed artist did a pretty good job including ending the song with his signature falsetto high note.
2. New Edition
After 35 years in the music industry, New Edition still has it. They received the BET Lifetime Achievement Award and the cast from their BET movie performed. Luke James, singer cast as Johnny Gill, even brought the guys to their feet during his solo. It was apparent that New Edition’s music has stood the test of time. Everybody- young and old, was into the performance. Johnny, Ralph and Bobby sang their leads and even though they are in their 50’s- New Edition can still kill their choreography.
1. Tamar Braxton
The BEST performance at the BET Awards was Tamar Braxton. Word in the these Twitter streets is she was lip syncing.

All that was missing was her kicking off her heels and taking off her wig and throwing it in the audience. Her performance WAS FIRE!
We can’t wait to do it again next year! Who were your favorites?
