Halle Berry Says Folks Should Stop Complaining About “Black Lives Matter” If They Aren’t Doing This

In the current political climate, it seems like everyone has an opinion about everything.  In the age of hashtag activism, people arm themselves with “free speech” as if it were a gun and holster.  While raising awareness for social injustice is part of the process, is it enough?  Halle Berry doesn’t seem to think so.  She’s here to remind you that actions speak louder than words.

While at Cannes Lions discussing her next endeavor Hallewood, Ms. Berry decided to get some things off her chest.

“In my world, I get so tired of people complaining about, ‘Oh black lives matter,’ and they pontificate and pontificate about it, and I say, ‘Well, what are you doing about that? It may not seem significant to you, but that’s how we start. Have you called your local politicians, have you written a letter?’”

She continued, “When they say they’ve done nothing, I say, ‘Well, don’t talk to me … because you are part of the problem, because you are sitting here spewing negativity and complaining I don’t have time for people who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk.”

Halle has never been one to hop on the Black Lives Matter train and has remained relatively silent in recent years regarding the issue of race.  However, she has joined the recent trend (TLC, Tinashe) of discussing sociopolitical issues abroad.  She did follow up with a more positive message.

“But I think we do need a place today for people to come together and have real conversation. Based on where we are now with this great divide in our country, it’s my obligation as an artist, to start providing that forum for people to talk things out and bring us a little bit closer.”

It appears she’s hoping to do just that with her fansite Hallewood.  The website is an opportunity for fans to interact with her in a more personal way.  It launches next month.

How do you feel about her comments?  Do you think Ms. Berry has a point?
