The Natural Hair Community Mourns The Loss Of One of Its Most Revered Veterans
The natural hair community has lost one of their own. Tameka Monroe, 32, or as most of us knows her as MeechyMonroe has lost her battle with brain cancer. In a post on Instagram made by sister MsVaughntv, she shares the sad news
Meechy started sharing her her natural hair journey on her Youtube channel HERE, in 2010. She found tremendous success creating content on natural hair and fashion. She and her sister, MsVaughntv, traveled across the United States and Europe as the dynamic duo calling themselves The Monroe Sisters.
In late March of 2014, Meechy was diagnosed with an extremely rare cancerous tumor in her brain. With loved ones around her she would spend more than two months in the hospital. That same year she underwent two brain surgeries. Before her first surgery, Meechy donated her hair to Locks of Love, benefiting children who have suffered hair loss from cancer.
In a video on her Youtube page Meechy shares her story:
There is a saying “We are our sister’s keeper” and without question Meechy was kept in out thoughts and prayers with the hashtag #GetwellMeechy.
Meechy, wildly popular and inspiring with her fight with brain cancer was interviewed by PEOPLE about her diagnose and her outlook on life
“I lost all my hair, I had the worst year of my life, but you know what? I’m still the same person, still the same soul,”
On April 15, 2015 Meechy let us know her brain cancer was in remission!
So from then on she lived her life and shared with us. She celebrated her 30th birthday and got into fitness. In 2016, she was there for her sister’s a baby shower, and she was able to see and hold her new niece.
This a loss felt all throughout the natural hair community. Taren Guy, Cream of Nature, Blakizbeautyful, Moknowshair , Alexandra Butler, and more are sending condolences and sharing stories.
Our condolences go out to her family.
