Try This #1 Method For Repairing Damaged Hair At Home

I think that one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding being on #teamnatural is that natural hair requires less maintenance and care than chemically straightened hair. While our hair is indeed magical,

it is not bulletproof.

I, for one, have been known to slack on the the deep treatments and trims,  and have paid dearly for it.  That’s why I’m all about doing at-home (or salon) protein treatments a few times a year, as needed.

Why are protein treatments necessary for damaged hair?

According to Curly Nikki

Naturally curly hair relies on a balance of proteins, nutrients, and oils to support healthy roots. Your hair is approximately 91 percent protein, and is made up of long chains of amino acids. Harsh chemical treatments, exposure to sun, pollution and lack of proper care can lead to the breaking up of these chains resulting in brittle and dull hair. Since the hair is made up of protein it would only make sense to treat your hair with protein.

What does this all mean?

If you’re experiencing breakage, particularly, your ends snapping off, and overall dull, brittle hair, try a protein treatment. However, before you do, you should be know that protein treatments are not moisturizers. So while they will strengthen your hair, they will not bring moisture back in. Therefore, after giving yourself a protein treatment, you must follow it with a deep, moisturizing treatment. Lastly, protein-treatments are not a replacement for trims. Regular trims are still a must, and if you have hair that is coming out from the roots, go see a dermatologist and/or a licensed haircare professional.

What’s my #1, fail-proof protein treatment?

Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment:

61FNrgkuA3L. SY679 1According to Naturally Curly:

This two-step treatment will rebuild the hair structure with its unique formula of magnesium and modified proteins. A powerful protein treatment will restore your hair’s elasticity while softening those brittle and dry strands that have been damaged by chemical services and heat. It even helps to remove mineral deposits from swimming pools and hard water.

Watch how to apply this treatment from start to finish:

I just want to reiterate that this treatment WILL make your hair hard, so deep conditioning afterwards in a must, as well as a solid leave-in and oil-sealant.

Protein treatments should not be applied weekly, as you might use a deep conditioner. Use them every few months, as needed.  I would also definitely recommend a protein treatment for color-treated hair.
