Gabrielle Union has been popping up more and more in our news feeds lately. The actress is currently promoting her new line with New York & Company (shop the collection HERE) and her book “We’re Going to Need More Wine: Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and True”.
The timing of her promo tour coincides with the discussion of sexual assault, which is a very personal subject Gabrielle. She has discussed her experience with sexual assault throughout her career. When Gabrielle was 19, she was raped at gunpoint while she was working at a Payless Shoe Store. In recent weeks, the debate over sexual assault has shown an ugly side of our culture. Victim blaming and shaming has been rampant, and Gabrielle took time out to address the issue in a series of tweets.
“Remember, I got raped at work at a Payless shoe store. I had on a long tunic & leggings, so miss me with that “dress modestly sh*t.”
She further explained her perspective during her recent appearance on The View and Good Morning America:
.@itsgabrielleu says “we have to stop the victim shaming and the blaming” reacting to the belief clothing choice can invite sexual assault. pic.twitter.com/IBOU1CJ78B

From sharing her painful fertility struggle to baring all about her own rape experience, Gabrielle is using her #BlackGirlMagic to make a difference. I do hope this encourages more victims to come forward.
How do you feel about Gabrielle’s tweets and interviews? Will you be buying her book?
Way more sensitive and constructive ways to start this blog post other than “Gabrielle Union has been strutting her stuff on the promo circuit lately.”
agreed. I changed it. Thanks for the constructive criticism.
