Listen, dolls have come a long way since I was a kid. I was relegated to Barbie or Baby Alive (My mom was NOT paying for an American Girl Doll)but our kids these days have options, honey. Options.
And I’m here for it.
Vitiligo is a a long term skin condition characterized by patches of the skin losing their pigment. Michael Jackson was known to suffer from the condition, and in recent years, model, Winnie Harlow has brought even more attention to it as well:
Still, it’s got to be tough for kids and even adults to not see themselves in something as simple a doll. We’ve made tons of progress in the doll world as far as diversity, but vitiligo sufferers have been left out of the equation.
But not anymore!
Artist, Kay Black, makes custom vitiligo dolls and they are the most beautiful dolls I’ve ever seen.
Kay told People Magazine
“I’m motivated by everyday people I see walking up and down the streets..People are literally in tears when they get their dolls,” she tells PEOPLE. “I want to create dolls everyone can relate to.”
