Colin Kaepernick is GQ Magazine’s “Citizen of the Year”
Sporting all black and a powerful afro, Kaepernick’s picture on the December issue of GQ makes it clear: he’s not done, yet, not by a long shot. The revolution, as far as he’s concerned will be televised.
GQ’s editors interviewed activists, writers and influencers, including Ava DuVernay, J. Cole, Harry Belafonte, Carmen Perez, Tamika Mallory, Ameer Hasan Loggins, and Linda Sarsour, about Kaepernick’s legacy and character:
“I see what he’s done as art, “DuVernay said.
“A lot of people excel at creativity—making TV, movies, painting, writing books—but you can be an artist in your own life. Civil rights activists are artists. Athletes are artists. People who imagine something that is not there. I think some folks see his protests, his resistance, as not his work. Not intentional. Not strategic. Not as progressive action. As if this was just a moment that he got caught up in. This was work. This is work that he’s doing.”
