Meet The Black Makeup Artist Who Is KILLING The Game on IG
Makeup artist, Kaneshia Shana, ain’t fooling with y’all, okay? Not even a little bit.
There are a million and one Instafamous Makeup Artists on the gram, but Kaneshia is the first makeup artist whose work literally stopped me dead in my tracks. She is a true indeed talent. Frankly, I’ve grown tired of only seeing skin smoothed out the Gods and highlights to the heavens. No shade, but there has been a lapse in artistry on the gram as of late.
I am not a makeup artist, so I won’t even pretend that I know or understand the intricacies of that career field, but I do know talent when I see it. And Kaneshia is indeed raw talent. But she didn’t just get here. When I sat down to speak with Kaneshia I learned that she has been creating content both on Youtube and Instagram for 5 years.
I used to do my own makeup by watching other people on Youtube, and then one day I was like, was like you know what? I can do this.At first i was afraid to do it, but then I just started it and loved it so much and I just haven’t stopped.
Kaneisha, who is also a wife and a mother of four, didn’t just “blow up.” Indeed with less than 8,000 followers on Instagram, and under 6000 on Youtube, she is considered a “microinfluencer,” and has often felt discouraged by what she perceives is a lack of growth on her social media platforms.
I’ve been discouraged. Every year I’m like, I don’t know why i’m even doing this because no one sees my work, but if it’s something you are really passionate about and want to do, you have to move forward. It’s all in God’s timing. It might not be in the first year or 3rd year, but you have to keep going with it. Once I stopped worrying about the people who were following and started creating for myself, that’s when people started noticing me.
Even though we’re almost in 2018, I feel like women of color don’t get the recognition they deserve and it’s disappointing and discouraging..I see people that have started after me and have way more followers than me, but their content and what they’re creating isn’t even as good… I think ultimately being a woman of color plays into that, especially in the beauty community. But I’m not letting it stop m. With the Fenty line dropping I’m just hoping that more black beauty gurus will get more recognition and more opportunities.
