Protective styles are a great way to style natural hair that eliminate daily styling and manipulation. Low manipulation styles not only protect the hair from breakage, but are a great way to cut down on how much time you spend on your hair. If you’re a lazy natural like myself, you are not here for DIY styling that takes more than an hour, or involves several steps to finish. So here’s a round up of protective styling options perfect for the girls who cannot be bothered, especially during the winter!
Forget about a Wash N Go – I’m here for a Wig N Go! I was not sure about wearing a wig at first but when I tell you when you find a good wig or two, you could easily get addicted. Not only do wigs allow you to completely tuck your hair away, it also allows you to experiment with styles that could potentially damage your natural hair. You can try a short wig if your hair is long, a straight wig if your hair is curly, or a different hair color without doing anything to your own hair. Since you take it off daily, this allows you to access your own hair and scalp when needed for cleansing, conditioning, and any other treatments.

Sew-ins can completely protect your hair, or you can select an area to leave out for a more natural look while the majority is protected. It has all the perks of a wig, except there’s no taking it off and putting it back on each day. As long as your hair is in great condition, and the foundation braids are done properly, your hair can thrive in a sew-in.

Crochet extensions are individual braids, faux locs, or textured hair that are crocheted to foundation braids with a special hook. This can be done by a professional or you can DIY if you aren’t been too lazy. This options gives you the look without the time, and if properly cared for, can last a month or more.
Here are a few crochet styles you can try:
Roll, Tuck & Pin
What I love about the Roll, Tuck & Pin, is that it only takes a few minutes, and is perfect for any occasion.
Crown Twists or Braids
This style is also great for any occasion, and really easy to achieve. You can do this style with your own hair, or use hair extensions if your hair is short or you just want to keep your hair underneath.
Technically it’s not a natural hair style, but why not? It protects your hair and they look amazing. Shop headwraps HERE.
By the way, Cantu Beauty makes an amazing collection of Apple Cider vinegar-based products just for protective styling. I swear by this line, and currently use the products as I plan to protective style for the entire winter. Shop the collection HERE.
That’s all folks. Hopefully this post has provided you with some easy natural hair inspiration for these cold winter months. Personally, I don’t want to see a strand of my own hair until May!
