Here Are 4 Ways To Keep Your Scalp Healthy During a Protective Style

This post is sponsored by Head & Shoulders and SheKnows Media, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I know. If you’re in the Northeast or Midwest, you’re not even trying to hear anything about spring or summer, since the weather ’round these parts has been insane. But rest assured, a warmer climate will land in our neck of the woods sooner than you think, and with it, a desire for many of us to protect our tresses so we can be laid out at the beach or pool without a care in the world.

While protective styles do protect your hair, your scalp is another story altogether. Crochet braids are my protective style of choice, however, scalp health is important no matter if you’re weaving it’, wiggin’ it, or braiding with or without extensions.

And I know what you’re thinking. All we need to do is rub some castor or coconut oil on the scalp, and keep it pushing. However, if you find yourself pattin’ your weave multiple times a day, something more might need to be done.

Firstly, it’s important to dispel the myth that itching and flaking is solely caused by dryness. #Issalie.  These scalp issues are commonly caused by an allergic reaction to the fungus that lives on everyone’s scalp. The fungus, malassezia globosa, is present on almost everybody’s scalp and feeds off of the scalp’s natural oils. For some people, this isn’t an issue, but for others, the skin’s response can lead to dryness, itching, flaking, and dandruff.  One of the ways to keep your scalp healthy if you’re experiencing dandruff and flaking is the scalp care active, Zinc pyrithione (ZPT).

This Leave-On Treatment is a spray that can be used out-of-the-shower for fast-acting relief from scalp issues in between washes, or while your hair is in a protective style.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

You can use Apple Cider vinegar before or after shampoo ( I prefer before shampoo). Just mix it with water (I prefer to use 2 parts water to one part AVC), spritz onto your scalp and hair, rinse, then follow with a shampoo and conditioner.

3. Wash Your Hair With a Moisturizing Shampoo

The key to a healthy scalp is a clean scalp. So before you protective style, make sure your scalp is thoroughly clean. Swap out your co-wash for a shampoo, preferably one with moisturizing properties (like THIS one). It’s a healthy scalp miracle drug.

4. Massage your scalp

Whether you’re applying Head & Shoulders Clinical Solutions Leave-On Treatment or your favorite natural hair oil, massaging your scalp while applying either or both treatments helps to stimulate the scalp, and therefore allows for better absorption of the products.

Protective styles are a fun and creative way to switch up your style, but they should never come at the expense of your overall scalp health. I’m currently working to grow out my shaved sides and tapered cut, so making sure my hair is healthy from root to tip is super important.

Glad to know they’ve released an improved version. I can’t wait to test this out and see if it works just as well as the old formula did.
