Before we jump into this, let me just drop this here:
Okay, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s talk about the white tears that are currently flowing all over the internet due Juvia’s Place’s latest release.
if you aren’t familiar, let me catch you up. Juvia’s Place (Click HERE to learn more about the company) is a 4 year-old black-owned cosmetic brand. The company is owned and operated by a dark skin Nigerian woman who began the company with the goal of providing rich and pigmented makeup that will, above all else, flatter deeper skin tones. We are, as you know, so often excluded in the formulation of mainstream makeup. With Juvia’s Place, however, our melananted sisters aren’t an afterthought, we’re at the forefront.
Chichi Eburua, Owner and Founder of Juvia’s Place has said:
When I was creating my palettes I wanted each palette to be representative of the African culture and art. I took a look at the beauty industry and there was nothing that truly represented the black culture as a whole. I feel like the market is here, we’re here [black women] and we’re beautiful. It just doesn’t make any sense why we’re not represented fully in the cosmetic industry.
That being said, JP released four new loose highlighters on Saturday to mixed reviews.
I, of course, love them:
All four shades look gorgeous on my skin tone, however, I think the Royalty Duo is best suited for lighter skin. Some white women, however, don’t agree, and are calling out the brand for excluding them:
OG Beauty Guru, Jacke Aina jumped into the fray on twitter yesterday:
To which one user replied:
In a viral twitter thread, Makeup Artist, Lauren Elyse, defended Juvia’s Place as well:
I can’t make this stuff up, y’all. Needless to say, each, and every shade looks BOMB on me, friends. See for yourself:

Hey, Boo! My name is Lisa and you’ve stumbled upon my own little corner of the world. I’m a 30 something-year-old writer/mother/wife who happens to love lipstick, high heels, blackness, and the truth. You’ll find a mix of everything on this site, so I won’t bore you by trying to define this space. I hope you stay awhile!
Omg the white tears are so salty! LOL!!!!
Lisa, they really have some nerve, but all I can do is laugh. Are they serious? lol
Anyways, you’re gorgeous, and the Nubia is calling my name.
Oh no! I’m going to have to choose from 900 other brands that cater to light skin. Wahhh! There is a reason there are different brands out there. Not every brand has to cater to everyone.
preach
I’m super fair and I love the brand. Finally some bright colors. I did buy a highlight in what I thought was a light color so we shall see lol.
Um, what? So when we barley had representation and makeup that worked for our many shades of black and brown. They didn’t complain. But now that we create our own companies, they mad. Really?
I’m always so amazed by situations like this. These comments are just as bad as “them” feeling excluded from things like the NAACP, HBCU, Black Girls Rick and the like! You excluded us from all of your stuff, so we create something that allows us the same thing as you, so we can FINALLY be included, and you’re mad because we don’t include you? Then cry reverse racism! WHAT?!?! GOOD BYE!!!!!
