While many people will claim that how a woman looks should be the least of her concerns while pregnant, I rebuke that message. Once I got beyond the morning sickness of the first 16 weeks, spending a little time adjusting my beauty routine to support a healthy pregnancy has been really therapeutic for me. I like to look my best, and I’m not too humble to admit that I do look great while pregnant. But, as always, I didn’t wake up like this, so I’ve compiled this short list of some of my pregnancy beauty tips for expecting mothers.
When we are pregnant, our bodies lose a lot more water than it’s taking in, so dehydration during pregnancy is very common. According to American Pregnancy, pregnant women require more water as it helps in the formation of the placenta and the amniotic sack. Long term dehydration over the course of your pregnancy can have a number of effects on not only you but your baby as well. It can cause you to overheat, become dizzy, produce low amniotic fluid, low breastmilk production, and a number of other issues. So it’s important that you drink plenty of fluid. From a beauty standpoint, it goes without saying that drinking plenty of water will aid in cell turn-over and help give you that glow we all know and love in pregnant women.
Extra Tip: If you want to add a little flavor to your water you can add a couple of slices of lemon or you can infuse it with fresh fruit. Here’s a post that will show you 30 ways to brighten up your water.
Moisturize Your Skin
Yes, this includes drinking water to keep it hydrated from the inside out but you need to do more than that. During pregnancy, the skin can become increasingly dry which will cause it to itch and can sometimes bring on eczema. A way to combat dry skin is to apply a great long-lasting moisturizer for your body and your belly. Frankly, lathering my belly in thick lotion 2xs a day has become a de-stressor. Who doesn’t like a little bit of skincare pampering?

Sun protection is so important, even during pregnancy, to help combat the tendency for the skin darkening or hyperpigmentation. Here’s a list of my favorite sunscreens. Whichever product you choose remember that regardless of the season sunscreen with a minimum of at least 30SPF should always be included in your beauty regimen.
Avoid Soaps and Cleansers with a High pH
Keeping up your pregnancy glow takes more than just drinking water, wearing sunscreen and moisturizer. You should also make sure to keep your skin clean. Excessive oils can clog your pores and cause you to break out. Most people think the way to avoid this is to use skincare products that are overly drying. These cleansers typically contain a high Ph. Our skin’s natural pH is about 5.5. The higher the pH of the cleanser the more it will strip your skin of its natural oils. Here’s a test you can try to find out the pH in the soaps you use. My advise is to simply use an oil cleanser. My absolute favorite oil cleanser is
One Love Organics Vitamin B Cleansing Oil & Makeup Remover is all natural smells like pineapples and gets your skin squeaky clean without overly drying. To use it to remove your makeup, rub a few drops into your skin with dry hands. Then wet a paper towel with warm water and use it to wipe your face clean. Repeat 2-3 times until all your makeup is off. Follow with a foaming cleanser and moisturizer.
Ditch the Chemicals
During pregnancy, moms-to-be are constantly asking themselves, is this healthy, what are the ingredients, and will this harm me or my baby? My advice? go as clean as possible with the beauty products you’re using while pregnant and nursing. I’ve already listed a few clean beauty products I stan for, but here are a few others that are ow to no chemicals that are great for your pregnancy beauty routine and beyond.
